Six Nations: Scotland's Richie Gray has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament

Scotland lock Richie Gray will be on the sidelines for the rest of the RBS Six Nations Championship due to injury and Tim Swinson has been called into the squad.

Castres forward Gray suffered an upper arm injury during Sunday's loss to Wales at Murrayfield.

And the Scottish Rugby Union website reported on Tuesday morning: "Yesterday's scan at Spire Murrayfield Hospital revealed that Richie Gray damaged a tendon in his arm on Sunday.

"He will require further surgical consultation on his return to his club, Castres, in France. However he is expected to be unavailable for selection for the next three to four months."

The 25-year-old, who went on the Lions tour to Australia in 2013, will therefore miss Scotland’s remaining fixtures against Italy, England and Ireland.

The news comes just a day after the Scots learned that prop Jon Welsh, a try-scorer against Wales, will miss the rest of the tournament with a fractured hand.

And it has also been announced that loose-head prop Gordon Reid has sustained a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his knee and will undergo a period of clinical support, assessment and rehabilitation.

However, Glasgow Warriors second row Swinson, who has been capped nine times previously, has been called into the squad for the remainder of the campaign.

And the 28-year-old could be set for a first Scotland appearance since last summer, having missed an autumn match against New Zealand with a back strain.

Scotland have performed creditably in both of their first two matches but were defeated 15-8 by France in Paris and then lost 26-23 to Wales.
