Dallaglio: We must build now

Wasps captain calls for more from his side

Lawrence Dallaglio has warned Wasps they must build on their second Heineken Cup success by demonstrating their ambitions away from the pitch. The Londoners put paid to Leicester Tigers' hopes of an unprecedented treble success with a thoroughly deserved 25-9 victory at Twickenham on Sunday in front of a record crowd for a club rugby match of 81,076. However, Dallaglio is concerned that Wasps will struggle to continue competing with the likes of Leicester unless the club secures the financial backing to capitalise on what has become, in recent years, a golden era. "At the moment we don't have the resources or financial clout that Leicester have," the former England skipper stated. "That's something we've got to sort out. We haven't got the buying power or strength in depth that they have. "We don't own a stadium or have 17,000 people coming to watch us. But what we do have in our team is soul.

Professional

"That's what we've always had and that's why we've stood toe to toe with them in the professional era. "We need to go away and address the issues off the field and make sure we don't fail because of our lack of ability to compete at that level. "We need to sort ourselves out and move forward. We need to compete with the likes of Leicester, Harlequins and Northampton who have great facilities." Dallaglio also went on to express his delight at the news - which broke shortly before Sunday's final - that the row which threatened the participation of French and English clubs in next season's European competitions had been settled. "The match was a great advert for the European Cup," he continued. "I often think finals can be bit of a letdown but I don't think this one was. "We're obviously all thrilled to bits that the Heineken Cup will go ahead next season - as will be every country that participates. "We've had a record attendance for the final this year and it's a fantastic competition."
