Rugby World hotshot - Daniel Evans

January's issue of Rugby World magazine profiles Llanelli Scarlets fly-half Daniel Evans.

There are certain ways to grab the coach's attention on your first competitive start. It's fair to say that scoring two tries, including one after three minutes, is a particularly good place to start. For 19-year-old Daniel Evans, the EDF Energy Cup game against Leeds Carnegie certainly saw him catch the eye, but the youngster was just pleased to be picked. "Yeah, it was nice to get my first competitive start in the cup. It was a bit of a surprise but I knew there were a few injuries about so there was always a chance." Far from resting on his laurels after one start, however, Evans is keen to keep developing. "This is only my second season in adult rugby," the Llanelli local is quick to point out. "I'm still getting used to the physicality and speed of the whole thing, and still trying to learn a new position." Having come through the Llanelli age groups, Evans is now plying his trade for the academy side where he was moved from full-back to fill the No 10 shirt this season, a move he always had in his mind. "When I was younger, there weren't many big-name 15s to look up to. It was all Jonny Wilkinson and Dan Carter, and pretty much still is, so I always had my eye on fly-half. I'm quite a strong kicker so it suits me, but generally I like to play what's in front of me and mix it up quite a lot." Having a soft spot for No 10 can't be bad at a club that boasts Wales fly-half Stephen Jones. Evans is looking to the future, but for now he's in the right place to learn from the best. "Having switched positions, I'm just looking to prove myself this season, learn what I can off the experienced guys and hopefully get the odd game under my belt." VERDICT: Hook and Jones might have a new rival in Wales before long.
