Turner nominated for award

Mathew Turner has been shortlisted for the prestigious IRB International Sevens Player of the Year award.

England ace in the running for top accolade

Mathew Turner has been shortlisted for the prestigious IRB International Sevens Player of the Year award. The England centre or half-back has been in sensational this season - scoring 33 tries in the eight legs, with only team-mate Dan Norton having scored more. And the 24-year-old Turner is now in the running alongside New Zealand duo Tomasi Cama and Frank Halai for the accolade. Turner, who played for Bristol before signing a full-time contract with the Sevens side, said: "It's a real honour to be nominated and to be held in that regard by your peers. "My form's been good this season but I get put in the position to score the tries and it's a team effort. I've just found myself in the right place at the right time - so I can't complain about that!" Turner is looking to emulate Simon Amor (2004) and Ollie Phillips (2009) in scooping the award, with South Africa's Cecil Afrika having won it last season. The winner will be announced after the Marriott London Sevens at Twickenham - the final leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series.
