Verdict

Waldstern recovered well from a tardy start to land a handicap at Newmarket six weeks ago but this might be a step too far for John Gosden’s three-year-old. Pondus makes more appeal among the younger brigade having finished ahead of Wadilsafa when runner-up to Addeybb in this grade at Haydock but DESERT ENCOUNTER should take all the beating. Second in a Group 2 at Newmarket in July, the top weight has won Group 3 contests at Goodwood and Windsor since and the Simcock/Spencer combination has been among the winners lately. Pivoine doesn’t look up to this level.
