In depth

Verdict

Northern Boy probably has the best form of the six runners but David Barron's colt has yet to race on ground as fast as this and may not be as effective under the prevailing conditions so preference is for Avelian, who gets the vote ahead of Penzo. The last mentioned showed improved form at Pontefract last time but that was on a softer surface and Howard Johnson's gelding is another that may want more cut in the ground to show his best form. Alan Swinbank's Wind Star would need to improve considerably on what he showed first time out, while Princess of Aeneas has given little cause for optimism so far. The vote then goes to Avelian, who showed promise on his debut at Newmarket last month and is entitled to strip fitter for the run and should be better suited by the ground than his main rivals.
