HEL'S ANGEL has plenty going for her tonight and gets the nod ahead of Mr Freddy, Embsay Crag and Aldaado. The last named has been drawn on the far rail and can have no excuses on that score. Michael Dodds' gelding does, however, try a mile for the first time and, having stayed 10 furlongs last season; he needs to conclusively prove he has the speed to be effective over this shorter distance. Embsay Crag won a handicap at Leicester (off a 2lb lower mark) last October but has not yet shown the same sparkle in two outings this term. That said, he did handle this course well on his seasonal debut in April, so cannot be discounted now his fitness is reasonably assured. Mr Freddy represents the current top trainer at Beverley and is respected accordingly. He was just outpointed by a potentially smart rival at Newcastle last month but he will be a big threat if he is in the same frame of mind in this slightly weaker contest. Getting a mile is obviously not an issue for Richard Fahey's colt and a big run is anticipated from him. However, Hel's Angel showed stacks of promise in maidens before she got off the mark on her handicap debut at Thirsk 11 days ago. That effort was all the more commendable, as she had the worst of the draw and also had to pass nearly every horse in the field when they came up the home straight. The Pyrus filly ran well at Beverley as a juvenile and, as she is potentially a bit better than a 70-rated handicapper, Hel's Angel is taken to burn her rivals off as they climb up the hill towards the finish in the opener.
