Upton Grey can defy topweight at the expense of Cape Vale, with Rubirosa and Nickel Silver two more that can at least figure. Upton Grey was thought good enough to merit an entry in the Royal Lodge, and made his debut in the race at Newmarket won by Rio De La Plata no less. However, he went out like a light on fast ground at Goodwood next time, before coming good on softer going at headquarters last month. He now goes the nursery route, which suggests that the son of Dalakhani has not progressed as quickly as connections would have hoped, but he should be good enough to follow up here. Cape Vale did nothing wrong on his debut at Thirsk, beating the hot favourite Tugalu, and this half-brother to Moss Vale appears to be the main threat to the selection. Rubirosa drops in grade after tackling good company at York, but is a bit more exposed, while Nickel Silver hails from a yard that always finds winning opportunities for its youngsters. Upton Grey has the scope to improve though, and is the one to beat.
