Brighton races review: Landmark day for Charlotte Jenner

A review of Thursday's action at Brighton where jockey Charlotte Jenner enjoyed a day to remember.

Charlotte Jenner enjoyed a day to remember at Brighton after having her claim reduced to 5lb following victory aboard Gentlemen in the Rendezvous Casino At Brighton Marina Handicap Stakes.

Despite being slow away the 11/2 shot finished fastest of them all down the outside of the track to get up in the closing strides and foil last year's winner Ada Lovelace by a length, providing the claimer with the 20th win of her career.

Winning trainer Phil McEntee said: "This is a good horse, make no mistake about it. We missed a race at Chelmsford City earlier in the week for this as he is 5lb better off on turf.

"He has his quirks, but somewhere in there is a good horse. He really wants six furlongs, but we thought we would get him off the bridle early on and make use of his stamina."

Mister Rockandroll saw a string of near misses come to an end with a battling success in the frost4cars.co.ukBrighton Challenge Cup.

With just a maiden victory at Chelmsford to his name, the Mark Johnston-trained 5/2 chance changed all that when doing just enough to land the mile-and-a-half contest.

Having tracked the early pace, the sole three-year-old in the field moved on past early leader Ifan a furlong from home before keeping at bay the fast-finishing Snowmane by a length.

Rider Nicky Mackay said: "He is just a very big and very green horse who just gallops on. He didn't do a tap in front, but when I went to pull him up he lit up again.

"He is a quite a big horse that takes a lot of organising and for me he will get further as he stayed the trip very well.

"He gave me a lovely ride and I think he would have gone on again if something came at him."

Mirsaalah won as an odds-on favourite should do when posting a facile victory from the front in the Waterfront Hotel Maiden Auction Stakes.

There was never a moment' of concern for the James Tate-trained two-year-old filly, with the 2/7 chance only needing to be pushed out to score by six lengths for Jim Crowley.

Crowley said: "It was not a strong race, but I just kept it simple on her and let her bowl along in front.

"I had to give her a tap a furlong out as she was looking about and I didn't want her to pull up. There is a lot of room for improvement and she will be a nice middle-distance filly next year."

Jockey George Baker praised the efforts of the staff at trainer David Lanigan's yard after Sequester made it three wins from four starts this year in the James Ross Jewellers Fillies Handicap.

Returning from a short lay-off the 5/1 chance added to wins at Wolverhampton and Bath when getting the better of a bunched finish to deny Shasag by half a length and regain the winning momentum.

Baker said: "You can probably forgive her run at Sandown as she carried 10st 6lb. The yard have done a good job with her to get her back like this.

"This was a slightly easier race and it looked a good opportunity for her. I just got her to relax and was happy to follow the Stoute horse (Hoorayforhollywood) through. She has done it well and hopefully can build on this."

Joanna Mason ensured her five-hour journey to the track was not a wasted one when guiding home Supa Seeker (11/1) in the checkatrade.com Lady Amateur Riders' Handicap.

The evergreen nine-year old stuck his neck out in game fashion to give trainer Tony Carroll his fifth winner at the course in the past two days when defeating Kitten's Red by half a length.

Mason said: "He gave me a brilliant spin. I thought the others were going to catch me, but he just stuck his neck out. It was great for Tony to put me on him and he has done a good job with him."

The Peter Hiatt-trained Roxy Lane (16/1) caused a minor surprise when obliging in the Rendezvous Casino Brighton Handicap, while Indus Valley (6/1) gained his first turf win in Britain when defying top weight in the Over 300 Used Cars At Frosts Selling Handicap Stakes.
