Ed Walker is planning to step Cap Francais up in trip for a shot at the Betfred Derby Trial at Lingfield on his next start.

The Lambourn trainer believes the son of Frankel would be well suited by the test of the extended one-mile-three-furlong Listed contest on May 11.

After winning his final two starts last year, Cap Francais found only Cape Of Good Hope too strong in a Listed race - which doubled up as a 'win and you're in' race for the Epsom Classic - at the Surrey track last Wednesday.

Walker said: "I think we will go to Lingfield for the Derby Trial there, because he has come out of the race at Epsom really well.

"It would be a bit reckless to run in the Derby off the back of that, and spend the £85,000 to supplement him to be a 33/1 shot or bigger.

"If he is in great shape next week we will give him a little bit of work at the end of next week, and if all is well we will go to Lingfield."

Cap Francais' inexperience was evident in last week's preliminaries.

Walker added: "I think we will take it a race at a time, and we will see how the trial goes.

"I like the idea of going to Lingfield after the way he behaved at Epsom.

"Chester can be a bit of a cauldron, whereas at Lingfield the preliminaries are a bit sleepier."
