Champions League: Shakhtar Donetsk thump BATE Borisov 5-0
Wednesday 5 November 2014 23:05, UK
BATE Borisov were thrashed by Shakhtar Donetsk for the second time in a fortnight, with the Ukrainian side sealing a 5-0 Champions League win on Wednesday to follow up their 7-0 victory two weeks ago.
Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano, who scored five goals in the first game, racked up his second hat-trick against a BATE defence who have now conceded 19 goals in their four games in Group H of the Champions League.
The Ukrainian side opened the scoring in the 19th minute in Lviv through captain Darijo Srna, who fired home via a slight deflection after a cross from the left by full-back Vyacheslav Shevchuk was headed down by Adriano.
BATE's hopes of a comeback were dealt a huge blow when they were reduced to 10 men following a bizarre incident after the half-time whistle had blown, when a coming together of Shakhtar's Srna and BATE's Anri Khagush saw the latter receive two yellow cards for persistent harassment of the officials.
It did not take long for the home side to make the extra man count and they doubled their lead on 48 minutes when Alex Teixeira latched onto a through-ball to slot home.

Just 10 minutes later and Shakhtar were out of sight when Adriano was brought down in the six-yard box and he stepped up to take the penalty himself, calmly placing the ball to the keeper's right.
Despite lengthy periods of possession it was not until the 82nd minute that Shakhtar struck again, a cross from the left by Douglas Costa turned into the net by Adriano for his eighth Champions League goal of the season.
The Brazilian then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, firing a right-footed shot into the goal from Ivan Ordets' corner.
The result leaves Shakhtar needing just a point from their remaining two games to progress to the next stage while BATE are five points behind in third place.
