Rangers 4-0 St Mirren: Rangers reach Petrofac Training Cup final
Saturday 28 November 2015 18:57, UK
Rangers booked a Petrofac Training Cup final date with Peterhead on April 10 after a dominant 4-0 semi-final success over shot-shy St Mirren at Ibrox.
The visitors had not won in five games and in truth never looked like reversing that trend in the teeming rain in Govan as goalkeeper Jamie Langfield mounted a one-man rearguard action against an incessant wave of attacks.
Jason Holt opened the scoring just after the half hour and, after Stuart Carswell had rattled the crossbar, late efforts from Kenny Miller and Martyn Waghorn - his 18th of the season - and a Sean Kelly own goal gave the scoreline a more realistic look.
Gedion Zelalem set the tone with a stinging drive that was tipped over by Langfield before Lee Wallace's deflected shot had the Saints 'keeper scrambling at his near post.
Miller was then sent scuttling though on goal, but the veteran striker could not find a way past Langfield, who was also equal to another goalbound effort, this time from the excellent Barrie McKay.

Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was briefly called into action by Stevie Mallan's free-kick but it was not long before the action swung back to the other end, with Waghorn the next to be frustrated, skipping round Langfield only to see Kelly head clear off the goalline.
The breakthrough finally arrived, courtesy of Andy Halliday's dinked pass and Holt's composed finish in the 34th minute, while Waghorn's free-kick from a promising position was comfortable for Langfield.
St Mirren, after a flicker or two of promise, suddenly found their groove as some neat build-up play created an opening for Carswell, whose shot from 14 yards smacked off the crossbar.
However, any hopes of a unlikely rally were quickly extinguished by Miller's simple finish in the 77th minute after Waghorn and Dean Shiels had done the donkey work and Waghorn himself deftly slid home the third from 18 yards seven minutes later.
Saints forward Steven Thompson stung Foderingham's palms but an increasingly trying afternoon for the visitors was complete when a lunging Kelly poked into his own goal in the final minute.
