Steve Staunton marked his first home game as Darlington manager with a 2-1 win against Shrewsbury - their first league victory of the season. The hosts recovered from an early setback, when Shrewsbury took the lead with less than two minutes on the clock; Lewis Neal heading in Jake Robinson's right wing cross from five-yards out. Darlington equalised in the 26th minute when on-loan winger Jamie Devitt fired a 25-yard free kick in off a post to lift the home crowd. The Quakers took the lead in the 57th minute when Steve Phillips could only parry an effort from Ian Miller into the path of Simon Thomas, and the on-loan striker side footed in his first Darlington goal from close range. Shrewsbury rarely threatened as confidence oozed through the revitalised bottom club and efforts from Paul Arnison, Gary Smith and Curtis Main could have made Darlington's win more emphatic.
