A double from Accrington's Colby Bishop inflicted the first Sky Bet League One defeat of the season on leaders Ipswich as both finished the game with 10 men.
The striker, playing non-league football last season, opened the scoring after 17 minutes, heading in Sam Finley's right-wing cross at the far post.
Ipswich almost equalised but former Stanley player Kayden Jackson had his effort scrambled off the line by Jordan Clark after 32 minutes.
Stanley, who moved out of the relegation places with the win, went 2-0 up after 41 minutes when another former Accrington player Toto Nsiala fouled Bishop in the area.
Bishop took the spot-kick and, although Tomas Holy guessed the right way, he tucked the ball into the far corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Paul Lambert made a double substitution at half-time and Ipswich looked more lively with Stanley having to make a second goalline clearance with Ross Sykes hooking Luke Woolfenden's header clear.
Defender Sykes was shown a red card for an off-the-ball incident after 78 minutes and Town substitute Armando Dobra also saw red at the same time as tempers flared.
