Ashes 2015: Australia 97-2 at lunch on day four in Cardiff

Australia are 97-2 at lunch on day four of the first Investec Ashes Test after Moeen Ali landed the huge wicket of David Warner with the final ball before the interval.

England had endured a frustrating morning up until that point, managing just one breakthrough despite some fine bowling, as Warner survived a string of close calls to reach a half-century.

But Moeen returned to the attack for the final over before the break and spun one past Warner’s defensive prod with the third ball of the over to remove him lbw for 52.

Joe Root missed an early chance when he dropped Chris Rogers' shot.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad both produced fantastic opening spells with the new ball but England squandered a great early chance when Chris Rogers edged Anderson and Joe Root put down a tricky but very catchable chance at third slip.

Anderson then had a huge lbw shout against Rogers after hitting him in front with a full-length delivery but England correctly decided not to review as the ball was swinging past leg stump.

Broad was causing Warner all sorts of problems at the other end, delivery after delivery passing the left-hander’s outside edge.

England did review when they thought Warner had nicked one to wicket-keeper Jos Butler but replays showed the noise came from the ball flicking the pad and they were frustrated once again.

However, Broad got a deserved reward for his efforts when Rogers (10) edged him low to Ian Bell at second slip and the third umpire ruled that the fielder had taken a fine low catch just before the ball hit the ground.

That made it 19-1 and, suitably encouraged, Broad continued to torment Warner, but the opener got a thin edge to another fine delivery, saving him from a possible lbw dismissal.

The England cricket team showed off their football skills ahead of the fourth day at Cardiff, with two nutmegs in the lead up to a great team goal.

And the early arrival into the attack of Moeen then brought Australia some relief, his second over going for 17 as Steve Smith cut him for four and Warner smashed a six and a four off successive deliveries.

Mark Wood and Ben Stokes came into the England attack but Warner was looking far more assured now and hit Wood for a pair of boundaries as he and Smith brought up their 50 partnership in just 40 deliveries.

Luck continued to favour the Aussie as well, a thick edge off Wood flying between the slips and gully for another boundary.

He went on to reach his 50 from 72 balls and then survived a caught-behind appeal when Anderson returned to the attack.

However, with the second-wicket partnership having reached 78 and starting to look very dangerous, Moeen struck to give England a huge lift.

However, Smith, who has looked impressive so far, remains there on 29 not out.
