The difference between success and failure in elite-level sport can often be decided by the finest of margins - and so it proved for Brendon McCullum during Gujarat Lions' IPL clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Chris Gayle was in full flow for RCB and sent the ball high into the air once more in search of another maximum. However, for once the West Indian's connection was not a clean one.
It still looked likely to bring him a boundary though before McCullum, sprinting around the boundary from long off, flung himself into the air and took a stunning grab at full stretch.
Gayle began to make his way off the field but soon stopped after McCullum showed great sportsmanship and indicated that the brim of his sunhat may have brushed the boundary cushion as he rolled over after taking the catch.
Replays confirmed the slightest of touches, six rather than a wicket was signalled and McCullum was left to rue his choice of headgear as Gayle proceeded to bludgeon 77 from 38 balls.
