Mohammad Amir can still make Pakistan's World Cup squad, says Mickey Arthur

"He's been brilliant in the last couple of weeks and he will have opportunities in England to show us he still deserves a spot"

Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah could make Pakistan's World Cup squad with strong performances in the five-match ODI series against England, says coach Mickey Arthur.

Left-arm seamer Amir - who has taken just five wickets in 101 overs in ODIs since bagging 3-16 in the win over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final - was left out of Pakistan's provisional 15-man group for the World Cup.

But he has been included in an enlarged 17-man party for the ODIs against England at The Oval (May 8), The Ageas Bowl (May 11), Bristol (May 14), Trent Bridge (May 17) and Headingley (May 19), as well as the preceding one-off Twenty20 international in Cardiff (May 5).

Yasir did not make either party initially but has now replaced fellow leg-spinner Shadab Khan for the games against Eoin Morgan's men - Shadab ruled out due to illness.

"He is running well and his attitude has been outstanding," Arthur said of Amir.

"He's been brilliant in the last couple of weeks and he will have opportunities in England to show us he still deserves a spot in the World Cup squad."

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed added of Amir: "We will try to provide him an opportunity in England so he can perform.

"It will be a good competition amongst our pacers. We have taken six fast bowlers, so we can rotate and not put any of them under pressure."

Yasir struggled during the 5-0 defeat to Australia in March, taking only four wickets at an average of 70.75, and Arthur has encouraged the 32-year-old to make greater use of his googly in order to press for a World Cup place.

"We wanted a wrist spinner [for the England series]," said Arthur. "Wrist spinners are in vogue in cricket at the moment [but] the key for Yasir is to challenge both edges.

"If Yasir's challenging both inside and outside edges of the bat, he becomes a different beast. If he only challenges the outside edge, players can line him up and hit him one side of the ground. That means he has to bowl his googly more often.

"If we get on a wicket that just grips a little bit, Yasir is a bowler we still feel can be a weapon for us. But time will tell on whether we pick him for the final World Cup squad."

On Pakistan's chances of a fruitful summer in England, Arthur added: "We leave very, very well prepared and with a team that has the talent and attitude to be successful.

"Our preparation over here has been outstanding, and our preparation leading into the World Cup is brilliant with a series against the world No 1 side in their own conditions.

"That will give us an opportunity to test ourselves, test our combinations and head to the World Cup with a lot of confidence.

"We know if we play to our potential, we have the ability to go all the way. We did make some mistakes in the past, but we won't repeat them.

"I can assure you that we have prepared hard and we will stretch ourselves to the limit to ensure things go our way at the World Cup."
