Steven Finn claimed 5-45 as Australia slumped to 168-7 on day two at Edgbaston to lead by just 23 runs.

Steven Finn was ecstatic after putting England in the driving seat in the third Investec Ashes Test with five wickets on day two.

Australia will begin Friday just 23 runs ahead after being reduced to 168-7 in their second innings with Finn's incredible efforts with the ball putting the hosts on the brink of taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

The Middlesex fast bowler told Sky Sports Ashes: "We knew there was a lot of hard work to do and to get that lead and put that pressure on them as a group of bowlers was fantastic."

His figures of 5-45 was an astonishing return for a bowler playing his first Test for two years.

"It feels fantastic," the 26-year-old added. "It's been a while since I played so to come here and get my game back is fantastic. I have felt good all game. Going for 14 in my first over made me question a few things.

"I soon settled though and bowled some decent balls. You just try to treat the game like any other. There are other external pressures in Test cricket and it's mentally and physically tiring but it's been a good day for us."

England's momentum was stifled to some extent in the afternoon as David Warner flashed his blade but even the lively left-hander is vulnerable and his innings ended on 77 when his side still needed 34 to avoid an innings defeat inside two days.

"There was a sniff at one stage but they played well in the middle of the innings. We had to settle in and work hard for our wickets.

"The game's not won yet though. They've got guys who can bat and there will still be a lot of pressure on us in the morning. We've just got to make sure we do a professional job."
