England bowler Mark Wood doubtful for third Ashes Test

England fast bowler Mark Wood is a doubt for the third Investec Ashes Test with Australia.

A decision on his participation will be made on Wednesday morning after captain Alastair Cook expressed concerns over the player's fitness.

The Durham fast bowler played in the first two matches of the series, impressing in Cardiff but struggling – as did all of England’s bowlers – at Lord’s.

Cook said: "With the weather today he couldn't bowl outside. We're a little bit concerned about Woody.

"We are going to have to make that call tomorrow. He has played a huge amount of cricket – for Woody – in the last six to eight months. We've just got to be careful. We want everyone to be as close to fitness as we can."

If Wood is unavailable, Steven Finn is favourite to return to the team.

Asked if the Middlesex fast bowler or Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid would replace Wood, Cook said: "I would think that with the weather forecast - it's not going be the heatwave everyone was talking about - that probably Finny will be pushing.

"Finn has been bowling really well for Middlesex and really well in the one-dayers. Whoever gets the nod is lucky."
