Mitchell Johnson is struggling to overcome a rib injury and will not be released to compete in a Twenty20 tournament in India.
Cricket Australia says the fast bowler will continue to work with medical staff before being given the thumbs-up to return to action.
Johnson will travel with the Australian squad on Sunday to the United Arab Emirates for a tour that includes two Tests, three ODIs and one T20 match against Pakistan.
Shane Watson has already been ruled out of the tour with a right ankle injury while Michael Clarke is hoping to recover from a hamstring injury in time to play in the Test series.
