Highlights from the Carabao Cup match between Newcastle United and West Brom.

Harvey Barnes struck twice for Newcastle as they survived a scare against West Brom to win 3-2 and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Isaac Price's first-half free-kick gave the Baggies a surprise lead at St James' Park, as he evaded Ewen Jaouen in the Newcastle goal with a smart effort on his debut for the club.

Another debutant then levelled for the Magpies, as Bazoumana Toure poked in from close range, awarded the goal after there was some uncertainty over whether it was he or West Brom defender Chris Mepham who got the final touch.

Nico Gonzalez is brought out at St. James' Park to the Newcastle fans after it was announced he has signed from Manchester City.

Newcastle draw Millwall in third round

Newcastle will face Millwall in the third round of the Carabao Cup at The Den. The fixture will take place either w/c Mon Sep 7, or w/c Mon Sep 14.

Barnes was then introduced at half-time for Toure, and swiftly completed the turnaround to put Newcastle ahead, firing in from close range after his initial effort from the edge of the box was blocked.

The pendulum would swing again, as Lewis Hall gave away another penalty - following on from the spot-kick he conceded to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday - which Price stepped up to convert and make it 2-2.

But several minutes later Barnes found the winner, sweeping in from close range to put Newcastle into the draw for the competition they won in 2025.

The key moments from Newcastle's second-round victory

19: GOAL! How about that?! A free-kick about 25 yards out... it looks like Isaac Price is going to whip a cross in, but instead he decides to sneak one around the wall and into the bottom corner. Jaouen completely flummoxed in the Newcastle goal!

38: GOAL! On his debut! Newcastle had been creeping back into the game and now they've found the equaliser! Steur works it wide to Amar Dedic. He then fizzes a ball into the middle and Toure looks to have stolen in to slot in.

Harvey Barnes restores Newcastle's lead over West Brom in their Carabao Cup clash.

48: GOAL! Off the bench and in amongst the goals right away! Barnes puts Newcastle ahead. A corner comes to Barnes on the edge of the box. He drives a shot low in towards goal that West Brom can't properly clear. And the winger has followed his shot into the box and he's on hand to then fire into the net!

76: PENALTY TO WEST BROM! Hall again! A handball from the Newcastle left-back and he's given away another spot-kick... just as he did against Liverpool on Sunday! West Brom have the chance to level!

77: GOAL! Price sends the Jaouen the wrong way! West Brom are level!!

81: GOAL! Lead restored! Barnes again! Anthony Elanga bursts down the right and then tees a pass into Dedic. He crosses low into the middle and Barnes finishes first time in the middle.

Jaissle praises Barnes after victory

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle:

"It's not only goals. As we saw also against Liverpool he was doing a really great job, not only in possession, also out of possession.

"He is disciplined, especially also with the combination with (Lewis) Hall. We're really pleased, I thanked him after the match, it was important that he scored."

Jaissle was full of praise for Championship side West Brom, revealing he spoke to opposite number James Morrison after the game.

"Relieved, it's always the most important thing in a Cup run that you take the result, that's what we did against a strong opponent.

"I had a chat with the gaffer. They're doing really well, I think they will play a great role in the Championship.

"But we also responded. It was important we saw character on the pitch, also after the second equaliser we stepped back and straight away we scored, that helped us of course.

"We are happy, an entertaining match for the fans. I think I would have less (of a) headache if we had not conceded the penalties."

Jamie Redknapp says everyone needs to stay calm with the new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp:

"He's done well so far.

"It's early days. He probably thought it was a really good job for him and a great opportunity. It's difficult at the moment, but Nico Gonzalez will be a good signing for them in that No 6.

"They had that midfield that had been so formidable in Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton and obviously it's all changed now.

"He's got a lot of young players and a little bit of pace. You could say he's already got more out of Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga than Eddie Howe did, even after just that one game against Liverpool.

"They're going to be all right, Newcastle. Everyone just has to stay calm with the manager and they'll get some good results."
