Melzer, Troicki and Marchenko through to quarter-finals in Croatia

Croatian Marin Cilic began the defence of his ATP PBZ Zagreb Indoors title with a comfortable straight-sets win over Jan Hajek. The top seed, who comes into the tournament off the back of a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open, triumphed 6-2 6-2 in just 57 minutes. Cilic converted all four of his break-point opportunities to brush aside the challenge of his opponent from the Czech Republic. Second seed Ivan Ljubicic, another home favourite, is also through to the second round after a 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 victory over Frenchman Arnaud Clement. However, the seventh-seeded Antonio Veic was forced to retire hurt when leading fellow Croatian Ivo Karlovic 5-4 in the first set. In Wednesday's second round action, Austrian Jurgen Melzer needed just over an hour to get past Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-2 6-3. Serbian Viktor Troicki, the fourth seed in the tournament, and Ukrainian Illya Marchenko are also through to the quarter-finals after victories over Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin and Croatia's Ivan Dodig respectively.
