Nadal and Safina given number one status

Defending champion Rafael Nadal will enter this year's Wimbledon championships as the number one seed. French Open winner and five-time Wimbledon king Roger Federer is number two while British hope Andy Murray is seeded third. There were no major surprises when the All England Club made the announcement as the seeding roughly corresponds to the ATP world rankings, although 2008 semi-finalist Marat Safin has been seeded 14 despite being ranked number 23. On the women's side, beaten Australian and French Open finalist Dinara Safina heads the list of seeds in a top 16 that has stuck rigidly to the WTA rankings. The tournament draw will be made on Friday.
