World number one continues clay-court form

Dinara Safina won her second clay-court title in as many weeks with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the WTA Madrid Open. The world number one, who defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova to triumph in Rome a week ago, demolished her Danish rival to record a comfortable straight sets victory. Wozniacki missed an opportunity to break Safina's serve in the second game of the match and was made to pay in some style. The ninth seed quickly fell 5-1 behind on her way to losing a one-sided first set and Safina broke again at the beginning of the second.

Missed chances

Wozniacki had another chance to break in the eighth game but the top seed held her nerve to hold out. Safina squandered a championship point when facing Wozniacki's serve but made no mistake on her own to clinch her 11th career title. "Since I became number one I'm playing better and better," the Russian said afterwards. "I was feeling very comfortable from the start of the match and I was trying to be as aggressive as I could, but even in the key moments I was very strong." The 23-year-old will head into the French Open in hot form, having won 14 of her 15 matches on clay this season.
