Top seed Jelena Jankovic is into the quarter-finals of the China Open after a straight sets victory over Aleksandra Wozniak on Wednesday. The Serbian world number two beat her Canadian opponent 6-3 7-5 after taking an early break to wrap up the first set before going 5-2 up in the second. But Wozniak broke back twice to level at 5-5 before making unforced errors to gift Jankovic victory The Serbian will now play seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1 0-6 7-5. The Slovakian shivered through two hours and 12 minutes of battle to defeat her opponent and afterwards rated it as one of the toughest matches of her career. "I even felt fog on my mouth and my legs couldn't move in the second set. It was a wise decision to wear (sweatpants) in the third set," she said. Meanwhile Zheng Jie battled a head cold to upset world number 10 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland to reach the second round. Zheng carried over a first-set 3-0 lead after rain stopped play on Tuesday and went on to win 6-2 6-3. "I felt as a Chinese player in an event in China, I should perform well. This is very important for me," she said.
Men's results
In the men's competition, top-seeded David Ferrer and number two Andy Roddick both received byes into the second round. Ferrer will play Dudi Sela of Israel on Thursday, while Roddick faces Brendan Evans in an all-American match. Fifth seed Fernando Verdasco set up an all-Spanish second round meeting with former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero after overpowering American Bobby Reynolds 6-3 6-3. In other matches, Sam Querrey defeated fellow American Jesse Levine 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4), while Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic beat Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Sela defeated Nicolas Devilder of France 6-4, 6-3 and Jean-Claude Scherrer of Switzerland beat Peng Sun of China 6-4, 7-6 (7). Go Soeda of Japan beat Bai Yan of China 6-4, 7-5, while Brendan Evans of the United States downed Roko Karanusic of Croatia 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (10).
