Austrian hits back in Kitzbuehel

Local hope Jurgen Melzer booked his place in the semi-finals of the Austrian Open with a battling win over second seed Rainer Schuettler. The Austrian, ranked sixth this week, dropped the first set against the Wimbledon semi-finalist but battled back to win 2-6 7-5 7-5. "I was moving horribly in the opening set, but I am glad how I fought my way back into the match," Melzer said. "I was well prepared coming here and have played some great tennis." German Schuettler had earlier won his second round match at the rain-hit event in Kitzbuehel, sending out Jan Hernych in three sets after the Czech had led 3-2 in the final set when the match was suspended on Thursday evening. Fourth seed Potito Starace will take on Melzer in the last four after the Italian slammed the fifth-ranked Eduardo Schwank of Argentina 6-1 6-2. Starace is bidding to emulate last year's performance when he reached the final, eventually losing to Juan Monaco.
