Serbian ace drops just two games on route to the last eight

Top seed Jelena Jankovic wasted little time in booking her place in the quarter-finals of the WTA Family Circle Cup in Charleston. The Serbian was simply too good for Anastasia Rodionova as the Russian was brushed aside 6-0 6-2. Jankovic is joined in the last eight by world number four Maria Sharapova, who comfortably secured a 7-5 6-2 win over Tatiana Perebiynis. It was a good day for the top seeds at Charleston with Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams, Vera Zvonareva and Agnes Szavay coming through tough ties. Russian fourth seed Dementieva edged past 13th-ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-4 7-5. Williams, the fifth seed, needed to overcome a stuttering start before she beat Katarina Srebotnik. The 12th-seeded Slovenian opened up in fine style to take the first set 6-4, however Williams came back to take the next two sets 6-4 6-3.

Frustrating

"I just kept making errors and it wasn't pretty out there," Williams said. "It wasn't the best tennis for me." Williams was not helped by a fall in the first set, with the American now waiting to see how the injury settles. "You know when you're playing and the adrenaline, you really can't assess yourself until the next day," she added. "It's kind of frustrating." Ninth seed Zvonareva caused a minor upset as she knocked out the sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli 6-4 4-6 6-1. And Hungarian Szavay also inflicted a defeat on a higher-ranked rival, with the No.10 seed seeing off the challenge of eighth-ranked Dinara Safina 6-2 7-5. In a battle of the two unseeded players, Frenchwoman Alize Cornet was too classy for Sorana Cirstea 6-1 7-5 as she recorded a 6-1 7-5 victory.
