Stan Wawrinka overcame a second-set slip-up as he reached the US Open quarter-finals with victory over Donald Young.

The Swiss fifth seed dropped his first set since the start of the New York tournament, but quickly regained control to close out a 6-4 1-6 6-3 6-4 win on Monday.

Wawrinka, the reigning French Open champion, claimed an early break for a 2-1 lead and calmly served out the opening set.

In his three previous matches, Young had come from behind to claim victory, twice rallying from two sets down, and he threatened another comeback by taking a break in the second set.

This setback drew an angry response from Wawrinka, who smashed a racquet, and his frustrations increased as Young levelled the match.

But the world No 5 served with more authority in the third set, breaking Young again before taking it with a trademark one-handed backhand down the line.

Wawrinka broke Young once more early in the fourth and soon secured his place in the last eight, where he will face Kevin Anderson after the South African beat Andy Murray in four sets.
