Elina Svitolina suffered more French Open agony as the Ukrainian fourth seed suffered a third-round 6-3 7-5 defeat to Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu.
Buzarnescu, the holder of a doctorate in sports sciences, defeated the Rome Open champion and two-time Roland Garros quarter-finalist 6-3 7-5 to set up a meeting with American big-hitter Madison Keys.
The 23-year-old Svitolina, who trains at Roland Garros, had been tipped as one of the potential winners, but she never found her groove on Court One.
She dropped serve five times and made 29 unforced errors, bowing out on the first match point when she buried another forehand into the net.
"Today, really, I was off and couldn't find my rhythm, my game. I was really struggling," said Svitolina.
"On the other hand, she was playing great tennis. You know, she was really, really on the ball. I couldn't do much to get a win. It was not enough."
Buzarnescu, who reached the final in Prague on clay last month, will tackle 13th seed Keys, the 2017 US Open runner-up.
Keys overcame a second-set wobble to beat Japan's Naomi Osaka 6-1 7-6 (9-7) to reach the last 16 for the second time in three years.
A match between two of the biggest hitters on the WTA Tour failed to really catch fire on a cool and half-empty Suzanne Lenglen Court with Keys helped on her way to the first set by a succession of wild errors from Osaka.
Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki downed France's Pauline Parmentier 6-0 6-3 to reach the fourth round.
The second seed, a quarter-finalist in Paris last year, will face Russia's Daria Kasatkina, who already has two wins over the Dane this season in St Petersburg and Indian Wells.
