Caroline Wozniacki has suffered an injury scare just seven days before the first Grand Slam tournament of the year starts in Melbourne.

The world No 8 was forced to pull out of the Sydney International during her first round match with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

The fourth seeded Dane was 1-1 in the second set, having lost the first 6-4, when she left the arena with her left wrist heavily strapped.

Wozniacki arrived in Australia on the back of a successful week in New Zealand where she reached the final of the Auckland Classic.

However, she remains confident that she will be fit for the forthcoming Australian Open at Flinders Park.

Regarding the injury she said: "I felt it during a shot. I hit it against the wind and hit it late and I felt it in my wrist.

"I've had it before so I know what it is. It was painful every time I had to hit a backhand, so I didn't want to do it worse before Melbourne.

"I'm just going to try and get some treatment on it and try and get ready for next week.

"I still have a week to go, so hopefully it'll be fine. We'll see how it feels on Tuesday. I'm confident that I'll be fine to play in Melbourne."

Zahlavova Strycova, meanwhile, faces Aussie Samantha Stosur in round two.

Elsewhere, the No 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska eased past Alize Cornet 6-3 6-2 in 85 minutes.

The Polish player recently linked up with Martina Navratilova who is hoping to help Radwanska secure a maiden major title.

She said: "Martina's going to be here on Tuesday. She's really helping me on and off court. The goal is the Grand Slams so we'll see how it goes."
