Jelena Dokic suffered a shock first-round defeat in the Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey tournament in Mexico. The Australian was upset by 21-year-old Romanian Alexandra Cadantu, going down 6-3 1-6 7-5 in a match lasting more than two hours. Italy's Roberta Vinci broke at the crucial moment in each set to edge out Coco Vandeweghe 7-5 7-5, while Nina Bratchikova beat fellow Russian Anastasia Pivovarova 6-3 6-1. Sara Errani barely had to get out of second gear as she beat Stephanie Dubois 6-2 6-2, breaking the Canadian five times.
