Borna Coric survived a gruelling battle with Marcel Granollers to reach the second round of the Miami Open while Karolina Pliskova launched her campaign in winning fashion.

The Croatian edged past Granollers 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-3 in two hours and 51 minutes to set up a second-round clash with number eight seed Dominic Thiem.

Diego Schwartzman also came through a marathon clash with Karen Khachanov to move into the second round.

The Argentine needed two-and-a-half hours to see off Khachanov 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-4).

Andreas Seppi had a relatively straightforward 6-4 6-4 triumph over qualifiier Radu Albot, while Tommy Robredo was made to work hard to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Damir Dzumhur beat Hyeon Chung 3-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1), while Andrey Rublev coasted to a 6-1 6-1 win over Florian Mayer.

There were also wins for Mikhail Kukushkin, Frances Tiafoe, Robin Haase, Adrian Mannarino, Yen-Hsun- Lu, Darian King, Horacio Zeballos and Andrey Kuznetsov.

Second seed Karolina Pliskova needed less than an hour as she launched her campaign with a straight-sets win over Madison Brengle.

The Czech saw off the American in 59 minutes with a 6-1 6-3 triumph.

"It was a tough one today against an American, she has the home crowd supporting here. So I'm just happy to be through," Pliskova told reporters after the game.

Dominika Cibulkova had few issues with qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg as the fourth seed advanced with a 6-3 6-2 win.

"It was my first match here, so it was pretty hot and it wasn't easy conditions. But I made it through. I'd never played her before, so that's always a new experience. I'm glad I got the job done," she said.

Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2012 champion, came through a tough test against Wang Qiang 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.

Caroline Wozniacki breezed past American qualifier Varvara Lepchekno 6-1 6-2 and number 26 seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-2).

Fellow seeds Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Yulia Putintseva and Shuai Zhang also progressed.

But it was not all plain sailing for the seeds as ninth seed Elina Svitolina, number 23 seed Daria Gavrilova and 29th-seeded Ana Konjuh crashed out.
