Jamie Murray will become the first British player to reach world No 1 when the new ATP Tour doubles rankings are announced early next month.
Murray was beaten in the opening round of the Miami Open, but current No 1 Marcelo Melo's defeat in the second round means the Briton will overtake him in the rankings.
Last year, the 32-year-old from Brazil made the semi-finals of the tournament, so the result means he will lose more ranking points than Murray - who was knocked out in round two last year.
He wrote on Instagram: "Last night I went to bed wondering if that was the closest I would ever get. Today driving in the car my phone started to go crazy. #1"
Playing with partner Bruno Soares, the 63rd player he has teamed up with in 13 years, Murray suffered defeat against Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen on Saturday.
However, when the rankings are updated on April 4, the 30-year-old Scotsman will have five points more than Melo.
Judy Murray referenced sons Jamie and Andy's world rankings in doubles and singles, writing on Twitter: "No.1 is No.1. No.2 is No.2. @ATPWorldTour Think il have a fizz."
Former Wimbeldon singles winner and four-time Grand Slam women's doubles winner Virginia Wade was ranked first in the women's doubles ratings - but the official rankings were not brought in until 1975.
