Replacement Moto Matu'u scored his first Super Rugby try to help the Hurricanes record a 33-12 win over the Waratahs on Saturday.
The result keeps the New Zealand side within reach of a top-six play-off spot as the tournament takes a one month break for the June internationals.
Matu'u's try with 18 minutes left came during the Hurricanes' first real attacking move of the second period and ensures Wellington have now won four of their last five games, while Waratahs have lost six on the spin.
The Hurricanes played without much of the ball for most of the second half while the Waratahs, well down on confidence, could not come up with a try and all their points came from four Berrick Barnes penalties.
Wellington's tries came from Julian Savea, Motu Matu'u, Conrad Smith and Chris Eaton with fly-half Beauden Barrett kicking two conversions and three penalties.
It was only the Hurricanes' third win in nine matches against the Waratahs in Sydney.
NSW captain Benn Robinson said there were no excuses in defeat.
"It was very tough, very disappointing," he said at full-time.
"The way we played, to let in 33 points is just very disappointing. You can't be letting in 33 points and expect to win. We've got three or four weeks now to look at our game and see how we are playing."
