Joe Pietersen helped himself to 13 points and the Stormers to a 21-8 victory over the Cheetahs in Saturday's Super 14 action.
Jacque Fourie also scored a try as the Newlands side took their tally to five wins from six starts in 2010, the Free Staters' solitary try coming form Meyer Bosman.
The hosts were ahead after only three minutes when Hennie Daniller was penalised for being in front of the kicker, allowing Pietersen to send over his first three pointer from long range.
The fly-half doubled the lead before making it 11-0 in the 25th minute, the forwards working it through the phases before Anton van Zyl fed Fourie to send in Pietersen on the left.
The extras made it 13-0 but the visitors hit straight back when Bosman finished off his own good work when a clever kick was well picked up by centre partner Robert Ebersohn, who returned it for Bosman to cross.
Naas Olivier surprisingly missed a simple conversion and the Cheetahs did well to keep it to 13-5 at the break as Stormers bore down on the try-line, but were ultimately frustrated.
Both sides had chances to score at the start of the second period but were guilty of handling errors close to the line, but a moment of magic from Schalk Burger effectively killed off the game.
A 40-metre drop goal from Olivier broke the deadlock but the Cheetahs' hopes of a fightback were short-lived, Burger tip-toeing down the flank past Fourie to score a superb try.
Willem de Waal, who had replaced the injured Pietersen at the break, missed the conversion but Olivier exchanged the favour by wasting another good penalty chance.
De Waal did make amends after the Cheetahs lost the bind at the scrum but with a 13-point advantage the last 20 minutes passed without much incident as the visitors went home pointless.
