Glasgow triumph in 1872 Cup

A 22-15 victory over Edinburgh in their 1872 Cup decider took Glasgow back to the top of the Magners League on Saturday.

Sean Lineen's men completed the double in convincing fashion over their Scottish rivals at Murrayfield, with tries either side of half time from DTH Van Der Merwe and Bernardo Stortoni.

Fly-half Dan Parks also added three penalties and a drop goal to increase his total as the league's top points scorer.

In contrast Edinburgh, who are now four games without a try relied solely on the boot of Chris Paterson for their tally after 80 minutes.

Glasgow, unchanged from last week's winning line-up make a sprightly start, Parks kicking them into a six point lead within the first eight minutes.

The first points came through a penalty after a loose pass from Edinburgh stand-off Phil Godman was hacked deep into the hosts territory, the second courtesy of a drop goal following a line out in the home 22.

Authority

Edinburgh clawed their way onto the scoreboard in the ninth minute when the visitors were pinged after Paterson turned Stortoni in the tackle.

But five minutes later Glasgow stamped their authority on the game when Max Evans broke up the middle.

The move finished with Parks side footing the ball to the left corner for Van Der Merwe to touch down for the score.

Glasgow lost two players in the second quarter when first Van Der Merwe and then skipper Alastair Kellock were both sent to the sin bin.

Van Der Merwe began his enforced break in the 21st minute when he interfered with airborne Mark Robertson and two minutes before half-time Kellock was sent on his way for an early tackle at the scrum base.

Consolation

Paterson and Parks exchanged penalties during the first sin-bin period but the former added another in stoppage-time to cut Glasgow's lead to 14-9 at the break.

Nine minutes after the restart though Glasgow scored their second unconverted try when Richie Vernon forced a five-metre scrum.

From the resulting pressure Parks produced a perfect crossfield kick for the unmarked Stortoni, who duly touched down.

Although Glasgow continued to dominate Paterson kept his side in bonus point contention with a fourth penalty 15 minutes from time.

Even that seemed to have gone though, when Parks slotted his third two minutes later but, with the last kick of the game, Paterson secured the consolation for the hosts.
