Wales finish their Four Nations campaign with a home game against Australia at Wrexham on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.
The hosts go into the fixture at the Racecourse Ground looking to register their first win in 12 meetings with the Kangaroos at full international level.
For coach Iestyn Harris the chance to compete at the top table in this tournament has been vital, particularly with a World Cup coming up in 2013.
So far they have been beaten 42-4 by a Sam Tomkins-inspired England in their opener and then 36-0 by New Zealand at Wembley.
"The players have learned a lot over the last few weeks by playing against some of the best players in the world," Harris said.
"Last week against New Zealand we improved on how we played against England.
"We know that we still have a lot of improvements to be made and we want to put together a more solid complete performance this Sunday in Wrexham against what will be a very good Australian side.
"This Gillette Four Nations tournament has been very good for us. Playing in competitions like this and giving youngsters the opportunity to shine is the only way that we are able to compete with the best as we prepare for the World Cup that we are jointly hosting in 2013."
Farewells
The match will mark the international farewells of half-back duo Ian Watson and Lee Briers, the latter having announced earlier on Friday that he would not continue to play for his country beyond this year.
"There comes a time in your international career when you realise that it's difficult to keep putting yourself out there," the Warrington playmaker said.
"It's been a really tough decision because of the pleasure I've had but sometimes you've just got to realise that it's time for the next generation."
As for team news, Wales' Cronulla forward Tyson Frizell will miss out on the chance to play against Australia after failing to recover from injury.
Frizell, at 20 the youngest player in the Four Nations, came off with an arm injury during the defeat by the Kiwis last weekend and has not recovered in time.
Peter Lupton is the only other member of Harris' 24-man squad unavailable after failing to shake off a nagging hamstring problem.
Australia, meanwhile, have opted to make wholesale changes to their line-up having already secured their place in the final.
Half-back Daly Cherry-Evans and forwards Beau Scott and Corey Parker will make their Test debuts while Jharal Yow Yeh and Josh Morris, who have two caps between them, have been picked on the wings.
Coach Tim Sheens switches Darius Boyd from wing to full-back in the absence of the injured Billy Slater. He's also given stand-off Darren Lockyer a rest, with hooker Cameron Smith once more taking over the captaincy.
With Tony Williams suspended and hooker Robbie Farah having returned home for personal reasons, Australia have only 20 players left in their squad.
