Patrick Ah Van scored two tries as the Vikings - who included Gareth Hock in their side against his future employers - ran in 24 unanswered points after the interval.
Salford had led 4-0 at the halfway stage thanks to a try from Mark Sneyd and could have been further ahead had things gone their way.
Darrell Griffin almost powered over after Lloyd White lost possession but the hosts, who will be changing their name to the Red Devils next season, struggled to break down a committed defence.
They eventually went in front five minutes before half time when Jodie Broughton, one of a number of Salford players turning out for the club for the last time, hacked on Ryan McGoldrick's kick for Sneyd to score.
Glorious chance
Rhys Hanbury did touch down for Widnes but the try was disallowed by referee Tim Roby for a knock-on in the build-up, while Ah Van wasted a glorious chance when he fumbled a kick close to the line.
However the Vikings simply ran riot after the interval, starting with Hanbury dancing his way through a static defence for a try that Jack Owens converted.
A kick by the excellent Kevin Brown brought an error from Danny Williams to gift winger Ah Van his first of the night after 65 minutes, with Owens landing the goal to make it 12-4.
Joe Mellor then touched down for a controversial effort before Ah Van exposed Salford's defensive frailties to complete his brace in the last minute - Owens stepping aside to allow Hock, who had been due to join Parramatta Eels next year before opting instead to stay in Super League - to boot the conversion.
It was a disappointing end to a see-saw season for Salford, who this week confirmed 12 new signings as they look to make an impact on the other end of the table in 2014.
Brian Noble's troops could yet finish on the bottom of the table if current basement dwellers London Broncos win on the road at Hull KR on Sunday.
