Penrith Panthers proved too strong for Canterbury Bulldogs on Sunday as a 28-12 win set up an NRL play-off semi-final with Canberra.

The Panthers trailed 6-0 early in the game at Sydney's Allianz Stadium but ran in 28 unanswered points and outscored their opponents by five tries to two, the Bulldogs' second coming with defeat already assured.

Next up are the Raiders, who progressed to the second stage of the finals under the NRL's second-chance rule for top-four regular-season finishers despite a 16-14 defeat to Cronulla Sharks on Saturday.

The Sharks go straight into the preliminary finals along with Melbourne Storm, who beat North Queensland Cowboys 16-10 to condemn the defending champions to a semi-final against Brisbane.

The Broncos were 44-28 winners over Gold Coast Titans and will meet the Cowboys in Townsville on Friday.
