Former captain expected to make next move in dispute with club

Salford are waiting for Malcolm Alker to make the next move in his dispute with the club. The long-serving former captain was sent home from training at the end of last week by football director Steve Simms. Alker, who joined the Reds' coaching staff after retiring at the end of last season, was absent from Sunday's 52-20 defeat to Castleford. The former hooker was expected at the club on Monday but Simms said: "He's not back and I've not heard from him." Salford chief executive David Tarry said he was hoping the matter could be resolved quickly. "We are waiting for Malcolm's people to contact us about a meeting," he said. "We need to get to the bottom of what's going on and we need to end the speculation." Simms, who has been overseeing all team matters, said he was unsure how long head coach Shaun McRae would be absent through illness. "I had a long chat with him last week and he seemed a little bit better," he said. "He said he'd like to come back soon but it's down to the medical people, you've got to take their advice."
