Salford have secured the services of former Australia international Reni Maitua and centre Iain Thornley on deals until the end of the season.

Maitua and Thornley both joined the Red Devils on transfer deadline day and have signed in time for the start of the Super 8s next month.

Back-row forward Maitua played for Australia under current Salford director of rugby Tim Sheens before switching his allegiance to Samoa in 2013.

Salford assistant coach Ian Watson said: 'We are really excited about the forthcoming challenge of the Middle 8s and a player of Reni's experience and versatility will be a great asset for the club in this series of matches.

"Reni has been one of the outstanding performers in the Championship this year and we are very confident with his huge experience at the very highest levels of the game that we can hit the ground running in Super League."

The former Paramatta Eels player joined Featherstone Rovers at the end of 2014 after his second stint with NRL side Canterbury Bulldogs where he began his career in 2004.

Featherstone chairman Mark Campbell said: "It has been an absolute pleasure to have Reni at the club.

"Reni came over here with an ambition to play in the Super 8s and he now has the opportunity to do this with Salford Red Devils. I only wish it was with us and I hope all goes well for him."

Thornley scored 25 tries in 40 appearances for Wigan after rejoining them in 2012 but has been restricted to only one Super League appearance in the last 17 months due to injury.

Watson said: "As soon as we realised that such a top young prospect like Iain was available, the club jumped at the chance.

"He will add depth and competition in our already established back line-up as we seek to build a quality squad to tackle the Middle 8s."
