Australian full-back links up with old coach at Craven Park
New Hull KR coach Craig Sandercock has returned to his old Newcastle Knights club for a second time to make a signing.
Full-back Shannon McDonnell, 24, a former junior Kangaroo, has signed a 12-month contract with Rovers and will join his old Knights team-mate Constantine Mika at Craven Park for pre-season training once he receives a visa.
"Shannon is a class player," said Sandercock. "He has played over 60 games in the NRL and, had it not been for Kurt Gidley, he would have been a regular in Newcastle's first team.
"Shannon has great anticipation and speed off the mark which is exactly what I am looking for. He certainly brings qualities to Rovers that will make him a great asset to the club."
Opportunity
McDonnell made his NRL debut as an 18-year-old with Wests Tigers and represented New South Wales Under 19s before moving to Newcastle.
"This is a great opportunity for me as I have always wanted to play overseas," said McDonnell, who made just seven senior appearances this year.
"Craig is a great coach - he is very enthusiastic and passionate about his football.
"I also know plenty of the Rovers players which is a bonus. I have played against Michael Dobson and alongside Blake Green.
"I was with Ben Galea and Ryan O'Hara at Wests Tigers and played with Constantine Mika at Newcastle so I can't wait to get over with the boys."
McDonnell's capture could be a major boost for Ireland's World Cup campaign. He was selected in their 2008 World Cup squad before having to withdraw due to injury.
