Broncos blank poor Wildcats

London Broncos made sure their stay at the foot of the Stobart Super League table was a brief one with an emphatic 36-0 victory over Wakefield.

The capital club, who slipped to the bottom on Friday night when Castleford upset Hull KR, registered just their fifth triumph in their last 33 outings.

Even more crucially for one of the competition's leakiest defences was the fact that they manage to shut their opponents out, keeping a clean sheet for the first time since March 2008.

Former Hemel Stags pair Dan Sarginson and Kieran Dixon both touched down in the first half to open up a 24-0 lead, showing the club's long-term commitment to developing local talent is continuing to bear fruit.

Gower power

However it was Craig Gower, one of their big-name overseas recruits during a major winter overhaul, who was the catalyst for three of their first-half tries at the Twickenham Stoop.

The half-back simply kicked the Wildcats into submission, starting with an up-and-under that rebounded backwards off Michael Robertson's thigh and into the path of Chris Bailey, who had the presence of mind after being held up to offload for the supporting Tony Club to flop over the line.

England Under 18 international Sarginson then showed why he has been singled out as a star for the future - not just for club but also country, even if he was born in Australia - with a fine solo score.

The forward put on the afterburners out on the left flank to breeze around Wakefield stand-off Isaac John and touch down for his third try in four games.

Gower delivered a high bomb that Dixon claimed to score his first Super League try before setting up Robertson with a deft chip over the top on just the second tackle, the set move catching no one at home for the visitors.

The same combination combined again to give the Broncos the perfect start to the second half, though Ben Cockayne helped them out by failing to defuse the bomb near his own line, gifting Robertson a second score.

Liam Colbon took the home side's try tally to half-a-dozen when he showed great bravery to dive in at the right corner; questions could've been asked about whether the final pass from Jamie O'Callaghan was forward but Wakefield, knowing the game was up, knew complaining was futile.

Chances

All that was left to see was whether the Wildcats, who came into the contest off the back of a stunning win over Catalan Dragons, could get on the scoreboard ahead of their long journey back north.

They had pushed hard towards the end of the first half but, in a play that summed up their overall display, forgot to put in a kick before the hooter sounded.

In the closing minutes it then seemed Richard Agar's side would break their duck, only for a knock-on to actually lead to them conceding again.

Shane Rodney, back in action after missing five matches, swooped on the ball and then set Luke Dorn free, the full-back having enough pace to stay clear of Fox for 80 metres and crown a superb Broncos display in style.

The result moves London up to 11th in the table ahead of the Wildcats, who have little time to lick their wounds before a Good Friday derby clash with Castleford.
