Denny Solomona scored four tries and Ashley Gibson bagged a hat-trick as Castleford romped to a 56-16 thrashing of Wakefield at St James’ Park.
Wakefield announced ahead of the match that experienced Aussie Brian Smith is to become their new head coach and the closing match of Magic Weekend gave an indication of the size of his task.
Super League’s bottom side conceded 10 tries as they lost their 13th match in a row and they are seven points adrift of 11th-placed Salford in the standings.
Castleford posted 50 points against Wakefield at Magic Weekend last year and this time they secured a best-ever Super League success over their local rivals.
The Tigers took the lead after just three minutes when Solomona raced over after being found by Michael Shenton.
Solomona is back in top form after three months out with a knee injury and he grabbed another try four minutes later after a Richard Owen error handed Castleford some easy ball.
Shenton then dummied his way into the clear before making a try for Jordan Tansey but Wakefield then responded through speedy winger Tom Johnstone, who raced 80 metres with an interception.
And Wakefield closed to within four points after 18 minutes when Jon Molloy grabbed a loose ball and sent Dan Smith under the posts
Shenton then barged his way past Johnstone to score in the corner but the impressive Wakefield man redeemed himself with a fine tackle to foil Solomona and then grabbed his second try of the game, after taking a pass from Dean Collis.
It was 22-16 at half-time and Solomona did complete his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half, scoring easily after ex-Tiger Owen had slipped over when trying to deal with a Luke Gale chip.
And Gibson then basically wrapped up the win for Castleford with a quickfire double, scoring in the corner after a blind side attack and then diving over after great work from Jake Webster.
Solomona cruised over for his fourth try when Wakefield again failed to deal with another Gale kick and then Gale himself, who landed eight goals on the day, got in on the try-scoring, after unselfish play from Solomona and Oliver Holmes.
And there was just time left for Gibson to complete his hat-trick, as he scored in the corner after Liam Finn had been tackled just short.
