Michael Jamieson was left to consider his future after failing to qualify for the 200m breaststroke event at this summer's Olympic Games in Brazil.

The 27-year-old Scot, who collected a silver medal over this distance in London four years ago, could only finish fifth at the national trials on Friday.

Jamieson, the only British male to win a swimming medal at the London Games, hinted that retirement could be his next move.

He said: "I don't know if it's there anymore. I don't know. That could be it, I think. The last couple of years have been horrible but I wasn't even in it."

During his career, Jamieson won a silver medal at the 2012 World Championships and 2013 European Championships, along with a brace of silvers at two separate Commonwealth Games.

Friday's race in Glasgow was won by Andrew Willis, whose time of two minutes 08.08 seconds was 0.44s inside the qualifying mark set by British coaches.

Adam Peaty, a triple world champion who has already secured his place in Rio after winning the 100m breaststroke final, led at the half-way stage of the longer distance but faded to finish sixth.

But he was not too disappointed, saying: "I wasn't even looking to qualify.

"I got to 100 and thought 'this is too fast' but that's what it's about. I'd rather have these guys do the 200 because it means I can focus on the 100 instead."

Great Britain are due to announce their Olympic swimming squad next Thursday.
