Troubled receiver moves from Cleveland to New York in trade

The Cleveland Browns have traded troubled wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets in exchange for wideout Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trunsik and undisclosed draft picks. Browns coach Eric Mangini has used his contacts with the Jets, who he coached last year, to organise a trade for the troubled Browns man. Former first round draft pick Edwards has undoubted talent but has struggled in recent years to emulate his breakout season in 2007, when he caught 16 touchdown passes. The NFL is currently investigation allegations that Edwards punched a friend of NBA star LeBron James outside a nightclub, and that seems to have been the final straw for Mangini and the Browns. Former Pro Bowler Edwards will now try and rebuild his career in the Big Apple as he joins the Jets with 10 receptions and 139 yards in four games so far this season.

Right thing

"It's the right thing for us and for Braylon," Mangini said. "This is a fresh start for Braylon. "It's a great opportunity for him and I expressed to him that I hope he takes advantage of it." Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said that the team had thoroughly checked out Edwards' off-field issues, and were satisfied that it was a decent gamble that he could find his Pro-Bowl form in New York. "It's just another piece that we wanted to add," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "We're excited to get Braylon. We think he's going to help us. "It was a position that we liked, but it was also a position we felt that if there was an opportunity to improve, we were going to go ahead and try to do that.
Research
"We went through thorough research. We're comfortable with adding Braylon. We'll cooperate with all the authorities, and we're glad he's here. We did our due diligence." Edwards is the second big name to leave Cleveland under Mangini after he traded tight end Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay during the off-season.
