Unsettled tight end set for new challenge in New Orleans

Jeremy Shockey has been traded from the New York Giants to the New Orleans Saints for two draft picks. The Saints have agreed to hand over second and fifth round selections in the 2009 draft for the tight end, who missed the Giants' Super Bowl run last season due to a broken leg. The deal remains subject to NFL approval and is also contingent on Shockey passing a physical. The 27-year-old was thought to be unhappy with the amount of blocking he was required to do in Giants coach Tom Coughlin's offense. Drafted 14th overall out of the University of Miami in 2002, Shockey made 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns during his six seasons in New York and was selected to the Pro Bowl on four occasions. In joining the Saints, Shockey will be reunited with New Orleans head coach Sean Payton, who was the Giants' offensive co-ordinator during 2002 when he won rookie of the year honours. "Jeremy Shockey was a great competitor and contributor during his years with the Giants," general manager Jerry Reese said in a statement. "We wish him well in New Orleans." Coughlin added: "Jeremy is a very talented football player who always played with great enthusiasm and great effort. "He was excited about playing. Jeremy always enjoyed being a physical football player and a tough football player."
