Panthers have enough of receiver's run-ins with the law
Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett has been released by the Carolina Panthers after being arrested for the second time in three years for driving-while-impaired.
Jarrett was pulled over by police for speeding on Interstate 77 in Charlotte, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Bob Fey said he then declined to take a breath test to determine his blood-alcohol level - with results from the ensuing blood test not available for several weeks.
The 24-year-old has been released on bond and is due in court on Wednesday, but he will not be returning to play for the Panthers who have had enough.
Carolina have ended Jarrett's bitterly disappointing four-year stint with the team, bringing in former New York Jets wideout David Clowney off the waiver wire as a replacement.
While having various problems off the field, Jarrett has done nothing on the field to justify his second round selection in the 2007 draft having caught just 35 passes and one touchdown in his entire four-season career.
Situation
"I talked to Dwayne and told him the situation here is just not working out for either side," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney.
"We had a chance to pick up off waivers a receiver we considered claiming when he became available four weeks ago. We wish Dwayne the best."
Jarrett second a Pac-10 college record with 41 touchdown catches, and the six-foot-four receiver was thought to be the perfect foil opposite Steve Smith, but he has never come to grips with the NFL.
After struggling to make an impact, Jarrett fell behind rookies Brandon LaFell and David Gettis in the pecking order, and he could now face a suspension from the league if convicted.
Clowney should get an immediate role on the team, with Steve Smith struggling to make Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears with an ankle injury.
The former Green Bay Packers man spent four seasons in New York with the Jets, but was released to make room for new signing Santonio Holmes who will be returning from suspension.
