Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was injured by one of his team-mates on Saturday while playing in a charity softball game.

Matthews was pitching to offensive lineman Lucas Patrick in the Green & Gold Charity Softball Game in Grand Chute when Patrick's line drive hit him straight in the face.

A stunned Matthews covered his face with his softball mitt and appeared to be bleeding as he left the pitch.

Matthews confirmed later in the day that he had sustained a broken nose and would need surgery once the swelling had gone down enough to allow it.

After the injury, a net was brought in to protect pitchers from being hit by batted balls.

The injury is not expected to impact Matthews' availability for preseason or regular season games but he admitted on Twitter it had been a lucky escape.

The 32-year-old will be playing his 10th season in the NFL, all of them for the Packers who drafted him with the 26th pick of the 2009 Draft.
