The New York Jets have informed cornerback Darrelle Revis they will be allowing him to become a free agent on March 9.
Revis, one of the best defensive backs in the franchise's history, was not at his best in 2016 and was recently arraigned on four felony charges and one misdemeanour after an incident in Pittsburgh.
The move, which had been widely predicted, will save the Jets $9.3m (£7.5m) in salary cap space, although there remains the chance he could come back on a renegotiated deal.
"Darrelle Revis is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Jets uniform," Jets owner Woody Johnson said.
"His combination of talent, preparation and instincts is rare and helped him become one of the most dominant players of his generation.
"I appreciate Darrelle's contributions to this organisation and, wherever his career takes him, his home will always be here with the Jets."
Revis entered the NFL in 2007 with the Jets, selected with the 14th pick of the draft, and spent his first six seasons with the franchise.
He went on to spend a year apiece with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, where he won a Super Bowl ring, before signing a hefty free agent contract with the Jets before the 2015 season.
The 31-year-old has been to the Pro Bowl on seven occasions, has been named a first-team All-Pro four times and was the AFC defensive player of the year in 2009.
